On December 22, 2020, the ALS Disability Insurance Access Act was signed into law receiving strong bi-partisan support. The emergency message recently put out by Social Security states processing instructions will be forthcoming. The takeaway here is that any claimant who has a diagnosis of ALS and who has filed or will file their SSDI application on or after December 23, 2020 should be paid for the first 5 months after onset. This is certainly good news for anyone afflicted with this horrible impairment, but it does beg the question why do claimants who suffer from other extremely serious and debilitating conditions some of which are on the Compassionate Allowance List (CALS) not receive the same benefit. Perhaps others are to follow.
